Very wet conditions but the match was still deemed playable as Euxton Blacks lined up against BAC in the early morning kick-off.
Mindful of trying to ensure that every boy gets an equal chance, we decided to change the team a little today, even though we knew it would be a very difficult game against a very good team. Therefore, David started in goal, Alex and Adam in defence, Jake, Stuart and Daniel in midfield with Will up front. Tom (captain ) and Alistair started as substitutes.
Martin and I told the boys to hold their positions and to support each other at all times. We also asked them to tackle as well as they could and to track back when we didn't have the ball.
The game started in the rain and it soon became apparent that some of the boys didn't really like playing in these conditions!! The rain certainly didn't affect the BAC boys nearly as much as they began really strongly. Adam and Alex continued in the same manner from last week and made several really good interceptions, but BAC passed and controlled around our midfield well and soon went ahead with a good finish. 1.0 to BAC. Euxton were clearly struggling against a very fine team and were unable to stop the BAC number 10 who was probably the finest player we have played all season. Time and again he picked up the ball and danced around two or three challenges easily and looked dangerous in every attack. Euxton tried their best and Jake, Will, Daniel and Stuart kept running and kept their heads up but there was a gulf in quality throughout the first half.
BAC were awarded a penalty and David pulled off a fantastic save which was great to see, but this proved the calm before the storm as BAC scored three more times before half time. 4.0 at the break.
Martin and I really attempted to cheer the lads up and made two changes with Alistair and Tom coming on. We told them to keep their chins up and to try and win the second half!
Euxton certainly looked better in the second half and contested the match well, made more tackles and generally put in a much improved performance. Tom and Alistair combined well and Jake tackled like a tiger! Alex and Adam played well and were unlucky to be up against a really strong team. David made some good saves but was unable to do much about the goals conceded. BAC added four more excellent goals and Will manged to score twice, which the boys deserved for their efforts, but the game ended 8.2 to BAC.
As the boys trooped dejectly off we reminded them that they had been outplayed by an excellent team and that there is nothing wrong with losing a game of football! In addition, this had been the first time this season that we had been comprehensively beaten and we must not forget the other 15 performances as we continue through the season. We need to keep our heads up and learn from this match and try again next time. You can certainly learn more from a defeat and sometimes you just have to congratulate the better team - The BAC number 10 in particular was a real star!!
Man of the match today was Will - 2 goals and a terrific work rate too, well done to Will!
See you at training on Monday!
